The Labour Party governorship candidate in the last Saturday’s election in Edo, Olumide Akpata says his party members and agents disappointed him by selling their votes to the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.
Akpata came third in the election with 22,763 votes, while APC’s Monday Okpebholo secured the first place with 291,667 votes, and Asue Ighodalo of the PDP came second with 247,274 votes.
The LP governorship candidate, while addressing journalists at a press conference in Benin, said his party members, leaders and agents went for the highest bidder by collecting money from the candidates of the APC and the PDP.
He also criticised the Saturday’s exercise, describing it as a transaction.
“The Saturday’s exercise was not an election,
but a transaction. It allowed the two dominant parties to buy a significant majority of the limited votes cast and those who participated and willingly sold their votes.
“We anticipated that powerful forces would attempt to skew the outcome in their favour, regardless of the will of the people,” Akpata
“It became painfully clear that we did not have the people, as many, including some Labour Party faithful and agents, willingly sold their future for peanuts to the very political parties whose actions and policies have impoverished them.”
