It’s unfortunate we lost Rivers to opposition parties- Bala Mohammed

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed has described the Saturday’s ’s local government election as unfortunate.

Mohammed specifically said he was shocked to see opposition parties taking over the 23 council areas of Rivers State.

Speaking on Sunday when his Rivers counterpart, Siminalayi Fubara, swore in winners of the election, Mohammed said,” It’s unfortunate that we lost to the opposition parties due what we caused to ourselves.

“We have lost as a party, but governor Fubara has established himself as the leader of our party in Rivers.

“At the national level of our party, you can not ignore a governor because he can do anything as chief security officer of a state.

“The Nigerian state is run by the Governors while the president is a tenant. Governor Fubara is a democrat. He knew that his party would lose, but he went ahead to act legally by making sure that other opposition parties had their representatives.”

THE PLAINTRITH had reported how the Action Peoples Party (APP) won 22 Chairmanship seats, conceding one to Action Alliance, AA.

Fubara, who also spoke at the swearing-in ceremony, said with the Local Government Council election over, the State had entered into a season of transformation where democracy would not only thrive but the people shall witness delivery of democratic dividends that satisfy their aspirations.

The Governor said, “But the truth remains, desperate situations require desperate measures. We were confronted with a situation where the local government of this State was heading to doom.

“And the truth about it is, because of the genuine love that we have for this State, we must salvage the local government election.

“And what we did, with the support of Rivers people, was to salvage the local government council. And to the glory of God, that has been done and dusted.”
