Tinubu’s 2027 ambition aggravating political crisis in Rivers

It is not an understatement to say that the ongoing political crisis between the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his predecessor, Siminalayi Fubara is as a result of the 2027 presidential ambition of president Bola Tinubu.

Wike, a current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory does not want to leave any stone unturned to hold on to his state having spent 8 years as governor.

Fubara became the governor of Rivers state with the support of the FCT minister.

A few months after his swearing-in, Fubara’s relationship with Wike started going sour.

Fubara, a sitting governor seems to be resisting Wike from taking over the leadership of the state from him.

The rift between the two leaders had affected the legislative arm of the Rivers State government while two different Speakers pledging loyalty to Wike and Fubara.

Wike attempted to trigger the impeachment of Fubara, his immediate successor, less than six months that he took over as governor.

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, the Minister and his successor have refused to shield their sword.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State on had called on President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency with a view to solving the political crisis.

Wike, a PDP stalwart, had supported Tinubu against the presidential candidate of his party, Atiku Abubakar to win the oil-rich state.

The APC polled 231,591, while the Labour Party scored 175,071 and the Peoples Democratic Party got 88,468 to come third.

Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister was, in part, to compensate him for his controversial role in Tinubu’s election.

Tinubu has made Wike the Emperor of Abuja, and he is relying on him to deliver rivers state for the APC in 2027.

Since his first day in office, Tinubu had made political calculations to shore up support for his re-election in 2027 by appointing Wike into his cabinet.
